Martinsville, NJ- Maurits L. Modin passed away peacefully on August 21, 2026, surrounded by the care and love of those close to him.
Maurits lived a full and interesting life. He was a proud U.S. Air Force veteran and pilot, and after graduating from NJIT, built a successful career as a professional civil engineer. He was intelligent, independent, curious, and always interested in learning and understanding the world around him. These traits were demonstrated by his dedication to maintaining his engineering licenses (PE, PP, PLS, CO, and BI) and taking continuing professional education courses well into his retirement and 80s.
He had a deep appreciation for history and old places. For many years, he lovingly maintained a more than 200-year-old country home in Cobleskill, New York, which became a special weekend retreat and an important part of his life. In the summer, he rode motorcycles through the long upstate country roads, and in the winter, he took his snowmobile through the fields. Ever the engineer, he built a turnstile in the ride-in basement so his snowmobile could be driven out forward—because it did not go in reverse!
Maurits shared the last 50 years of his life with his longtime partner, Linda Ward of Martinsville. He was previously married to Susanne Rollins.
Maurits was predeceased by his parents, Bengt and Bertha (Larsson) Modin, who were an important part of his Swedish family history and the foundation of the life that he built. He was also predeceased by his brother, Roy Modin.
Maurits is survived by his son, John, and John’s wife, Megan, and their children, Justin and Patrick; his daughter, Christianne, and her children, William and Kensington; his nephew, Christopher, Christopher’s wife, Sara, and their children, Andrew and Carolyn; and his niece, Susannah.
Maurits will be remembered by his family for his independence, intelligence, strong character, and the many experiences and stories that made his life uniquely his own. His passion for flying, history, and the places he held dear will remain part of the memories his family carries forward.
In keeping with Maurits’s wishes, there will be no formal funeral service. He will be cremated privately.
